Dang Gui

Chinese angelica root (Dang Gui) – The Legendary “Women’s Ginseng” and “Empress of Herbs”

Chinese angelica root (Dang Gui), also known as “Dong Quai,” “Tang Kuei” or “Chinese Angelica,” is the traditional Chinese name for the dried root of Angelica sinensis, one of the most respected and most-used herbs specifically for women in traditional Chinese herbal systems that has been part of legendary women’s health formulas for over 2000 years. This warm, sweet-and-pungent herb is particularly known for its ability to effectively supplement normal blood deficiency, regulate normal menstruation, promote normal blood circulation, ease normal menstrual pain, support normal postpartum recovery and build normal women’s health long-term – making it an ideal choice for women with a tendency toward normal menstrual irregularities, normal menstrual pain, normal postpartum weakness, normal pale complexion and normal women’s health concerns.

Traditional Understanding in TCM Systems – “The Women’s Ginseng and Empress of Herbs”

Within traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese angelica root (Dang Gui) is described as “the Women’s Ginseng” and “the Empress of Herbs” – only ginseng is rated higher! The saying goes: “Chinese angelica root (Dang Gui) means ‘the return of the husband to his wife'” – indicating its fundamental significance for women’s health. In the TCM theoretical framework, it acts on the so‑called Liver, Heart and Spleen meridians. According to this traditional description, Chinese angelica root (Dang Gui) primarily tonifies “normal blood,” moves “blood circulation,” helps “menstrual regulation” and supports “normal women’s health” – crucial TCM concepts for normal women’s vitality.

Chinese angelica root (Dang Gui) is seen in TCM as “the primary blood-tonifying herb” – one of the most fundamental herbs for normal women’s health and normal menstrual balance.

Botanical Composition and Research

Chinese angelica root (Dang Gui) contains over 70 bioactive compounds, of which the main ones are:

Phthalides (characteristic components – ligustilide, butylphthalide, 0.5–1.0% dry weight)
Coumarins (14+ different types – osthenol, isoimperatorin, 0.5–1.5% dry weight)
Organic acids (ferulic acid 0.1–0.3%, succinic acid)
Polysaccharides (blood-forming character)
Vitamins (A, B-complex, E)
Minerals (Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn)
Lignans (especially in Eastern Chinese varieties)

Modern scientific research shows that chinese angelica root (Dang Gui) components can offer very diverse benefits:

Normal blood tonification and formation: Studies show that polysaccharides can stimulate normal red blood cell formation and support normal iron uptake – probably through normal hematin elevation.
Normal menstrual regulation: Research suggests that certain components can support normal hormonal balance and regulate normal uterine contractility – the classical menstrual-regulating effect.
Normal blood circulation improvement: Phthalides (especially ligustilide) can promote normal vessel relaxation and normal blood flow, helping ease normal blood stasis.
Normal menstrual pain relief: Studies show that certain components can help normalize normal prostaglandin levels – which can reduce normal uterine spasms.
Normal anti-inflammatory action: Ferulic acid and coumarins can help maintain normal inflammation balance.
Normal antioxidant activity: Components possess strong free-radical-fighting action.
Normal postpartum recovery support: Traditionally widely used after childbirth to support normal blood formation and normal energy recovery.
