Three layers of energy
TCM distinguishes different types of Qi, each with its own function and “depth”.
Wei Qi – de verdediging
– Circulation just under the skin.
– Regulates opening/closing of pores, body temperature and first defenses.
– Easily affected by wind, cold, clothing and sleep.
A healthy Wei Qi gives a feeling of being “protected” against external stimuli.
Ying Qi – the nourishing flow
– Circulation in the blood vessels.
– Moves together with blood and nourishes organs and tissues.
– Provides nutrition and recovery.
Acupuncture mainly works with Ying Qi through the meridians.
Yuan Qi – de bron
– Deeply rooted in the Kidneys.
– Derived from the Essence (Jing).
– Is the “spark flame” that activates all functions: digestion, growth, reproduction.
Yuan Qi is difficult to influence directly; it is protected indirectly through good lifestyle, rest and nutrition.
Insight: When people feel tired and “open,” TCM often looks at Wei and Ying Qi. In cases of deep exhaustion, Yuan Qi and Jing are primarily considered in the diagnosis.
