Gypsum (Shi Gao) – The Mineral Used in Traditional Systems to Clear Intense Heat and Quench Thirst

Gypsum (Shi Gao) is the traditional Chinese medicine name for the naturally occurring mineral Gypsum fibrosum (fibrous hydrous calcium sulfate), a unique crystalline substance that has been part of traditional East Asian healing systems for over 2000 years . It is regarded as a heavy, mineral-rich substance with intensely cooling and fire-draining properties, particularly suitable for formulas aimed at rapidly lowering systemic heat, soothing severe oral discomfort, and quenching extreme thirst.

Traditional Understanding in TCM Systems

Within traditional Chinese medicine, Gypsum (Shi Gao) is described as a sweet and pungent mineral substance with very cold properties . In the TCM theoretical framework, it acts on the so-called Lung and Stomach meridians . According to this traditional description, Gypsum “Clears Heat and Drains Fire” and “Clears Heat from the Lungs and Stomach” – TCM concepts that stand for resolving aggressive, inflammatory-like systemic heat that presents as high body temperatures, severe thirst, and profuse sweating (traditionally known as the “Four Bigs”) . When Stomach Fire or Lung Heat flares up, related discomforts such as swollen gums, toothaches, or a hot, barking cough can arise . Gypsum helps perform this rapid cooling and descending effect.

In TCM formulas, Gypsum (Shi Gao) is seen as a mineral that helps support normal temperature regulation, protect body fluids from being scorched by internal heat, and calm severe restlessness . It is traditionally used to promote respiratory comfort during heat-dominant challenges, soothe acute dental and gingival pain, and, in its specially heat-treated (calcined) form, it is applied topically to foster the healing of skin sores and burns .

Mineral Composition and Research

Gypsum (Shi Gao) consists primarily of hydrous calcium sulfate (CaSO4·2H2O), alongside various trace minerals such as magnesium, iron, and zinc . This inorganic, calcium-dense profile is connected in traditional applications with support for normal temperature modulation and tissue recovery.

Modern scientific research shows that Gypsum extracts and preparations can offer specific benefits. Studies show that Gypsum (Shi Gao) preparations:

Possess significant antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties, helping to support the body’s natural temperature regulation during immune challenges
Have an anti-inflammatory effect, particularly beneficial for respiratory and mucosal tissues
Help regulate hydration and fluid balance, supporting the relief of extreme thirst
Contain high levels of bioavailable calcium that may help calm the central nervous system and reduce muscle spasms or irritability
Exhibit immune-modulating properties that support a balanced response to systemic stressors
When calcined (heated to remove water) and applied topically, act as an astringent to promote normal wound healing and cellular repair

Scientists particularly investigate how the calcium sulfate matrix of the mineral interacts with the body’s thermoregulatory center in the hypothalamus and inflammatory pathways to contribute to rapid systemic cooling .

Traditional Applications – TCM Context

In traditional TCM formulas, Gypsum (Shi Gao) is classically used in situations described as:

High fever, intense sensations of heat, and profuse sweating
Extreme, unquenchable thirst and a desire for cold drinks
Hot, forceful coughing or wheezing associated with trapped Lung heat
Swollen, painful gums, toothaches, or oral ulcers linked to Stomach fire
Topical application (calcined form) for slow-healing sores, burns, or localized skin redness

These are traditionalist descriptions that form part of the TCM thinking system and must not be equated with medical diagnoses in the sense of European medicinal product law.

Well‑being and Daily Use

Due to its intensely cold nature, Gypsum (Shi Gao) is valued by modern users not as a daily supplement, but as part of a targeted, short-term wellness approach aimed at cooling sudden, extreme heat flare-ups, supporting respiratory comfort, and soothing acute oral tension. The mineral works optimally in carefully balanced, short-term herbal mixtures (often paired with fluid-nourishing herbs to prevent excessive drying), combined with adequate hydration and a cooling diet.

Many users see Gypsum (Shi Gao) as part of a highly specialized intervention for acute inflammatory-like heat – as a potent supportive element in traditional routines, strictly alongside professional guidance and regular medical care when needed.
