Characteristics, Origin, and Composition

Royal jelly is a milky, yellowish-white secretion with a pearlescent sheen, produced by the mandibular (jaw) glands of young worker bees. Within the hive, it serves a highly specific and vital purpose: it is the exclusive, lifelong food of the queen bee (and is also fed to all newly hatched larvae for the first few days). This specialized diet is the sole reason a queen bee grows significantly larger than regular worker bees, can lay up to 2,000 eggs per day, and can live for up to five years, whereas a worker bee typically lives for only a few months.

The biochemical composition of royal jelly is extremely rich and complex. It consists of roughly 60-70% water, and is a concentrated source of high-quality proteins (9-18%), simple sugars (such as glucose and fructose), and beneficial fatty acids (including the unique compound 10-HDA, which possesses antibacterial properties). Furthermore, it contains a wealth of micronutrients, including 30 different amino acids, minerals (like magnesium, potassium, and calcium), trace elements, and an exceptionally high concentration of B-complex vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B8, B11, and B12), along with vitamins C and E. In its pure form, royal jelly has a distinctly tart, bitter, and slightly pungent taste, which is why it is frequently mixed with regular honey to make it more palatable.

Royal jelly (available pure, blended with honey, in capsules, or in liquid ampoules) is commonly used for the following applications:
