This product is sold exclusively as a dietary supplement. It is not a medicine. Its use is based on traditional TCM applications.

Main benefits

  • Pattern Identification: Traditionally used for the TCM pattern of Liver Fire blazing upward with underlying Liver Blood and Qi deficiency, characterized by irritability, severe splitting headaches, red swollen eyes, bitter taste in the mouth, sudden tinnitus, and marked emotional tension or angry outbursts.

  • Core Function: The formula is classically said to clear the Liver, purge Fire, cool the Blood, relieve toxicity, and simultaneously nourish Yin and Blood.

  • Fire and Blood Relationship: Based on the TCM principle that "excessive Liver Fire scorches Liver Yin and Blood," the formula actively drains the aggressive heat while concurrently nourishing the Blood, ensuring the liver's structural substance is protected from further heat damage.

  • Key Ingredients: Zhi Zi (Gardenia) and Mu Dan Pi (Moutan) clear heat, reduce Fire, eliminate irritability, and cool the Blood; Chai Hu (Bupleurum) spreads Liver Qi to relieve stagnation; Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), Bai Shao (White Peony), and Chuan Xiong nourish, invigorate, and harmonize the Blood to soothe the Liver; Niu Bang Zi (Arctium) disperses Wind-Heat and relieves toxicity; Fu Ling (Poria) leaches out Dampness; and Gan Cao (Licorice) clears heat and harmonizes the formula.

  • Endocrine/Neurological Component (TCM): Often used in modern practice for conditions characterized by hypermetabolic states or severe nerve pain (such as hyperthyroidism or trigeminal neuralgia) where constrained emotions and stress have transformed into destructive physical Fire.

  • Region of Action: Primarily targets the Liver and Gallbladder channels, particularly where they ascend to the head, eyes, and ears, clearing the upper jiao of rising Fire while anchoring the Liver via the middle jiao.

  • Classical Heritage: An important variant within the family of Liver-clearing formulas, it acts as a more nourishing alternative to the harsh purging of formulas like Long Dan Xie Gan Tang, making it suitable for patients with underlying deficiency.

Zhenatura Zhi Zi Qing Gan Tang Extra Strong is based on the classical Zhi Zi Qing Gan Tang (“Gardenia Decoction to Clear the Liver”), first recorded in the Ming-dynasty medical text Yi Zong Jin Jian (“Golden Mirror of the Medical Tradition”). Within traditional Chinese herbal literature, this specific combination of botanicals—including Gardenia Fruit, Bupleurum Root, Chinese Angelica Root, White Peony Root, Scutellaria Root, Sichuan Lovage Rhizome, Burdock Fruit, and Licorice Root—was described as a method to “clear Liver Heat,” “cool the Blood,” and “harmonize the Liver and Spleen” in accordance with the TCM theoretical framework. These descriptions belong exclusively to the traditional conceptual system of Chinese medicine and do not refer to modern anatomy, psychology, or scientifically validated physiological effects.
