This product is sold exclusively as a dietary supplement. It is not a medicine. Its use is based on traditional TCM applications.

Main benefits

  • Pattern Identification: Traditionally used for the TCM pattern of Lung and Stomach Yin deficiency with rebellious Qi, characterized by a dry hacking cough, sticky sputum that is difficult to expectorate, shortness of breath, dry mouth and throat, and occasionally dry heaves or vomiting.

  • Core Function: The formula is classically said to nourish Yin, generate fluids, tonify the Stomach, and direct rebellious Qi downward.

  • Lung and Stomach Relationship: Based on the TCM principle that "the Stomach is the mother of the Lungs," the formula addresses respiratory dryness by heavily nourishing Stomach fluids, ensuring the middle jiao can properly generate and send essential moisture up to the Lungs.

  • Key Ingredients: Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon) strongly nourishes Stomach and Lung Yin to generate fluids and clear deficiency Heat; Zhi Ban Xia (Prepared Pinellia) directs rebellious Qi downward to stop coughing and dry heaves; Ren Shen (Ginseng), Jing Mi (Rice), Da Zao (Jujube), and Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice) strongly tonify Spleen and Stomach Qi to support the generation of bodily fluids; while Corn Starch serves as a modern excipient for pill/tablet binding.

  • Respiratory/Digestive Component (TCM): Often used for chronic, stubborn "fire coughs" (such as those following a prolonged illness or associated with smoking) where structural dryness in the digestive tract prevents the respiratory system from naturally cooling and moistening itself.

  • Region of Action: Primarily targets the upper and middle jiao—specifically the Lungs, Stomach, and throat—areas most impacted by the loss of moisture and the upward rebellion of Qi.

  • Classical Heritage: First recorded in the Han-dynasty classic Jin Gui Yao Lue (Essentials from the Golden Cabinet) by Zhang Zhong-Jing, it is the archetypal formula for treating dry cough and dry heaves rooted in middle-jiao Yin deficiency.

Zhenatura Mai Men Dong Tang Extra Strong is based on the classical Mai Men Dong Tang (“Ophiopogon Decoction”), first recorded in the Han-dynasty medical text Jin Gui Yao Lue (“Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet”) by the renowned physician Zhang Zhong-jing. Within traditional Chinese herbal literature, this specific combination of botanicals—including Ophiopogon Root, Rice, Prepared Pinellia Rhizome, Jujube, Ginseng Root, and Honey-prepared Licorice Root—was described as a method to “nourish Yin,” “moisten the Lungs,” and “direct rebellious Qi downward” in accordance with the TCM theoretical framework. These descriptions belong exclusively to the traditional conceptual system of Chinese medicine and do not refer to modern anatomy, psychology, or scientifically validated physiological effects.

For Mai Men Dong Tang, take 3 tablets 2 times per day. These should be taken before or after meal.
